Here are the results of the Readers’ Survey – thank you to all who took the time to complete it. 16 forms were returned in total, a quarter of all readers (I hoped for more but I suspect that is a fair reflection of the general interest in the magazine).
3 were returned via the website, 3 by email and 10 by post. Most of the responses were similar in outlook. All bar one read the whole magazine, and all bar one prefer the paper version (two different forms). A suggestion that the on-line version should be free to all members could have considerable impact on NMC income, something to consider if this course were taken up.
Good suggestions include a Classified section for stock, equipment, supplies, anything to do with keeping mice, “How to” articles (particularly useful for beginners), more photos, “Fancier of the Month”, “Who’s Who” of current members.
The last two we have had at least twice during my time as editor, also a Reader’s Diary. These are time-consuming to produce but make for good reading. We just need someone to write them.
The NMC is a club which depends entirely on its members for everything. There are no journalists or photographers to provide the copy and the photos, and no potential clientele to attract commercial advertisers. Every reader can make a contribution.
With little input from current members, it is becoming difficult to find enough copy each month without relying on archive material and turning NMC News into a history magazine.
The alternative, of course, is no magazine at all, which would necessitate a re-write of the rules, and all members who are not able to see things online would be left high and dry as regards show schedules and show reports. That is clearly not an option. The answer is in your hands. So, send me your stuff!
